Background

Counter-Strike has been a part of my life for over 12 years, and I’ve been competing at an amateur level for about 10 of those. The time I’ve put into the game has led to a deep passion for it and the competition around it. But as I’ve gotten older and taken on more responsibilities, it’s become increasingly difficult to properly prepare for league matches.

Preparing for a new opponent involves several steps, including:

  • Predicting the expected map veto
    • Helps us focus practice week-to-week
  • Analyzing opponents’ tendencies per map
    • Player positions
    • Utility usage
    • Preferred bomb sites
  • And more

All of this prep can take hours of manual research. With life pulling my team and me in different directions, we simply didn’t have the time to do it properly. So we built a tool to help lighten the load: CounterStrat.

What is CounterStrat?

CounterStrat helps teams scout their opponents without spending hours on research. We started by building tools to summarize a team’s map preferences and roster usage with just a few clicks. This let my team focus on practicing one or two maps per week during the regular season, instead of manually reviewing map veto history.

CounterScout

This is our map preference scouting feature. When you look up a team, CounterScout shows their overall record and a breakdown by map — including how often they play each map, their win rates, and the rosters they’ve used. We also calculate a "PreferenceScore" that weights recent match data more heavily to reflect current trends.

You can also dive deeper into any map to see individual matches and the rosters used in each.

What's Next?

With CounterScout in a solid state, we’re now focusing on in-game prep. Our next feature, called Snapshot, will help analyze how a team plays: where players hold, which sites they favor, utility usage, and more. This will save time on manual demo reviews and may even reveal patterns we’d otherwise miss.

Conclusion

CounterStrat is a passion project with real practical value. I’m excited to keep building it and helping myself, and other competitors, prepare smarter. Thanks for reading, and feel free to try it out. We’re always open to feedback.
